Questions that cross your mind when you take the road less travelled
Moving out of your comfort zone is trying new things to challenge your limits that would eventually help you to discover qualities about yourself that you didn’t know existed. It could be when you decided to enrol for a marathon when you could not run more than 2kms or when you decided to quit your job to pursue your own entrepreneurial dream. After taking the initial decision of starting something new it will not take too long for you to realise that this was just the easier bit.
When you are actually “doing” these things that make you truly uncomfortable a hundred thoughts would cross your mind. Here I have listed two questions that you will always ask yourself during your uncomfortable yet promisingly worth-it journey:
Why am I doing this?
There are going to be days when things are not working as planned. As a newbie entrepreneur, you will find yourself surrounded by your employed friends who celebrate the arrival of their fat pay check. Whereas, your savings seem to be running out faster than you thought and your business is clearly not rolling money into your account.
Here, a word can be used to describe your life situation. Marathon runners have a term called “THE WALL” it is used to describe that moment when you are both physically and mentally defeated, when you start asking yourself this question, “why did I put myself through this in the first place?”
At this point, if the reason is strong enough in your own head, you will decide to move forward.
What if I fail?
When you have decided to move forward, the next thing that will cross your mind is the fear of failure. Since, you are doing something that you haven’t tried before you can’t make the slightest prediction on the outcome of your journey. The uncertain nature combined with evil forces of societal or peer pressure, makes you take notice of this question “what if you fail?”
You need to cut yourself some slack and face this question with the brightest smile. We have enough well known examples of people whose successes and failures are well known to the entire world- Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson and many more. Instead of reading about failures and successes of others, look at your own journey so far. Sometimes you might have been successful and sometimes you might have failed. You need to remind yourself that wherever you are today being a combination of the experiences that you have gained, irrespective of the result – failure or success. It is completely okay to fail as it is okay to succeed.
The learning is what you should take away from your journey irrespective of the result.
So, take that learning and move forward to another uncomfortable journey where you can apply the learning of the previous journey.
