Smart Cities: Smart Startups, Big Data and Smart Decision-making

Cities accommodate nearly 31% of India's current population and contribute 63% of GDP(Census 2011).Urban areas are expected to house 40% of India's population and contribute 75% of India's GDP by 2030. This calls for an intensive development of physical, institutional, social, and economic infrastructure to improve the quality of life and setting in motion a cycle of growth and development.here

With this focus, the Government of India has implemented various programs including Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Housing for All) , Swachh Bharat Mission and Smart Cities Mission among others.

At present, there are 8,200+ DPIIT recognised startups working to make cities smart in the same or allied sectors in the ecosystem. Out of these startups, the majority are working in smart construction and building materials (42%), 19% in Artificial Intelligence, 17% in Internet of Things and the remainder in Analytics and EVs and Smart Travel.

One such program being the Smart Cities Mission has been implemented aim to transform 100 cities in India (over a duration of 5 years) into sustainable centers of economic activity and make urban infrastructure climate resilient and sustainable, providing for affordable housing, adequate electricity and water, and effective waste management.

22 cities, including Agra, Varanasi, Chennai, Pune and Ahmedabad, have already completed all projects under the mission in March 2023, and the projects in remaining 78 cities are expected to be completed before the stipulated deadline of June 2023.click here

The Mission bagged several success stories to its name including:

1.Green Cities Platinum rating - GIFT City: GIFT City became India’s first greenfield smart City to achieve the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Cities Platinum rating, due to its contribution to making the city ready for a sustainable way of living, such as 100% treatment & reuse of wastewater

2.Streetlights as a multi-application platform – Bhopal: The ubiquitous street pole for lighting has been redesigned as a multi-application smart pole with the capability to accommodate multi-operator telecom base stations, inbuilt surveillance cameras, Wi-Fi hotspots, interactive digital signage for traffic and business, environment sensors & Cloud controlled EV charging

3.Intelligent Transit Management System (ITMS): Surat is implementing a city-wide integrated system called Intelligent Transit Management System, to manage diverse set of transportation needs for the city, tracking 115 bus rapid transit (BRTS) buses and 200 City buses.click here

4.Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response – Vizag: 50 Public Addressing Systems and 10 Variable Messaging Display Boards for dissemination of information during an emergency have been set up click here
